What Makes a Winning Team?
What are the elements that create a winning team? There are a variety of answers, but for the Lovell brothers, they are family support and passion. Unlike many teams at the Pro National level, Brad and Roger Lovell did not come from a racing background. Before their team debut in 2004, the brothers spent more than a decade 4-wheeling in Colorado and Utah. They grew up with their father at the wheel of a Ford Bronco exploring the expansive Colorado backcountry.
On May 26th, 1992, at an age of 15, Brad took possession of a shinny 1988 Extra Cab Ford Ranger as a gift from his father. Gone were the days of sleds, bikes, and radio controlled cars. Brad realized a lot of modifications were needed to keep up with Roger’s already lifted Bronco II. He spent two months getting permission from his parents and saving money. Then, under the guidance of Roger, he installed a lift kit on the Ranger. Two years later the Ranger received a bigger lift kit and larger tires. The brothers were learning what worked and what did not. When rockcrawling was discovered, and during the years of wild evolution that followed, the pair stood their course and slowly changed their vehicles to handle the new terrain. Finally, in the fall of 2003, Brad took the plunge and (again under the guidance of Roger) turned his Ranger into an all out competition rockcrawler. In the minds of the Lovells it is still the same vehicle but not many of the parts in use today are from the original. In 2006, the team will retire the outdated body style and work with Ford Motor Company to update it into a 2006 Ranger. Who would have thought that this once stock Ranger would live such a full life?
It was not written in stone, however, that the Lovells would end up at the cutting edge of rockcrawling. Many nights and weekends have been spent crafting and maintaining the truck. “Finding time to compete is a lot like building a rockcrawler,” says Roger, “You need to fit 10 lbs of stuff in a 5lb bag!” It is a challenge indeed and an added toil in day to day life. You may wonder why the brothers go through all the effort. “We work hard because we are passionate about it, and you can’t choose your passions. My wife would just assume it cost a little less, but were else can you combine this level of engineering, teamwork, and excitement?”
Many fans wonder why Brad, as the younger brother, got to be the driver. “Let’s just say that I am a little more of an aggressive driver,” Brad replies, “I have rolled on dozens of occasions. Roger never rolled once in 16 years of recreational 4-wheeling. Believe that? I’m not scared to take the risk of going over and he can read the terrain the best.” The results of the formula are pretty clear as the team has put together multiple winning seasons. Roger, now seated in a first class rock racer has pushed the limit himself while maintaining the Lovell cool.
Watch for more from the brothers as they strive to maintain their edge in the WE-Rock Pro Modified Class.
